Happy Women’s Day

HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY

First of all, sorry to all those men who feel that men’s day is not celebrated as good as women’s day. Every year on November 19th I hear that it’s “so not fair” to men that the men’s day is not celebrated with so much enthusiasm as women’s day. It is true, on one hand women talk about: rights, justice and equality and on the other hand we very conveniently forget to celebrate men’s day. While we glamorize roles that a woman plays, we easily take for granted what a man does.

Opportunities are divided equally but roles are still gender biased. If you observe an average Indian family, you will notice that the sole breadwinner of the family is a man. Even if the women in the house work, they don’t contribute in the family income. There is a huge pressure on the shoulders of an Indian male. He has to give his best, he has to look after the needs of everyone in the family. A woman can choose whether to be a house-wife or a working woman but a man does not have this convenience. This is just one example but there are many more things where a man does not have a choice. So it is really selfish of us, not make their special day as special as it should be.

But then there is this thought that why so much of hype about women’s day?I might be wrong but there are a few things which we can take into consideration.

Accept it or not, the fact is that the world is male dominated. Rules, laws, norms, traditions etc all are formed in such a way, since ages that men are facilitated whereas women suffer. ‘Sati pratha’, ‘widow remarriage refrain’ are some of the old practices that tortured women. Today in modern society we are liberal towards such practices but even in metropolitan cities we find girls who are denied education, women who cannot work after marriage, ladies who cannot wear jeans. These are definitely small concerns, but men are lucky enough to not even experience such issues. It’s the woman who leaves her home, family, friends, lifestyle and even a surname after marriage, not the man.

Unfortunately, in India we only react when the matter is big. For instance: no body worries about slavery until we will be ruled for 200+ years, nobody bothers about nepotism unless an actor dies, no one cares for corona till someone very close dies. Similarly, only issues like; dowry, rape, domestic violence etc are of concerned. But today on woman’s day I want to talk about small issues that every woman faces every day. These small things when put together becomes a huge burden.

In India we don’t disclose the gender of the child before birth because there are chances that a girl child will be killed even before she is born. This can prove that the struggle for a woman starts even before she is born.

Whether the woman is a home-maker or an office goer, she is always judged. The one at home is useless and the one who goes out is careless. So, to win the appreciation, it’s important for a woman to be perfect in office as well as home. The smart women achieve that too but still she cannot win hearts of her family members because she is always critically examined.

To sum up I would say that whether its nature or society both have been unfair to women. Every day is a challenge for a woman, either a small one like; will my in laws allow me to wear jeans? or a big one like; will my parents allow me to pursue my career? Hence, we might deserve this one day.  Let us feel important for a day because for the rest of the year we will be taken for granted.

Yes, it’s unfair to celebrate women’s day better than men’s day, but I think since most of the things that a woman goes through, are unfair then maybe it would be fair on their part to be unfair on one day.😉 Happy Women’s Day to all the strong women and a big Thank You to all the wonderful men who let women have what they deserve
