The Balancing Act

We all know the feeling. It’s the end of the day and you have hours of homework piled up, and only an hour before you have to run off to sports practice. You desperately don’t want to be up until 2 AM studying, but you also can’t fail that test on Friday. You are going to have to weigh some priorities, you can’t do it all. It feels like you’re drowning.

So what do you do?

I know it seems hard, but you need to prioritize yourself. Not that test or this assignment or making it to practice on time, but yourself. You need to do what is right for you, and in turn, you will be able to perform better on everything you need to get done.

What does that mean? Well, it can mean a lot of things. Maybe you need to take 5 minutes to listen to music or read a book. Maybe athletics is what helps you unwind and destress. Going to practice can give you the reset that you need to get your work done.

Whatever you do, don’t turn to social media for a “quick” break. We’ve all made this mistake enough times to know that break won’t be quick. You’ll get sucked in and spend hours scrolling. By the time you finally tear yourself away, it’ll be way too late to get everything you need to get done.

When you get back to your work, it’s really important to focus, which is of course easier said than done. Try your best to refocus your thoughts when they wander. Remind your self that worrying is a waste of time. Don’t spend too long on one problem or assignment. Staring at the computer or paper, not knowing what to write, makes you prone to distractions. Don’t be afraid to skip something and go back to it later.

What can be done to prevent this scary, overwhelming situation in the first place? I’ve got lots to say about that, but it’s saved for another post 🙂
